Opponent Preview - The Pullman Greyhounds

The Tigers face off against another familiar playoff opponent this weekend in Spokane as they meet the Pullman Greyhounds in a repeat of last year’s Washington State 2A Quarterfinal matchup.

The Greyhounds return an experienced team on both sides of the ball with an emphasis on defense and a diverse offensive attack keyed by RB Cody Weber, who rushed for 1200 + yards and 16 TD’s this season and QB Cody Peterson who passed for 50% efficiency and 833 yards and 11 TD’s out of their unusual “Broken Bone”  set.

I chatted with Mike Vlahovich of the Spokane Spokesman-Review about the Greyhounds and what the Tigers should expect to see in this Saturday’s matchup that you’ll hear live on SkagitRadio.com

Game Recap

Turnovers and huge game from Cole Sager lift Tigers to 38-21 win over Steilacoom

With much hype about Steilacoom’s quarterback Greg Herd’s speed and scrambling abilities, and the Sentinels’ 2A #4 ranking coming into Friday night’s first round state playoff game against the Burlington-Edison Tigers, the first two Steilacoom touchdowns seemed devastating to the Tigers and their fans. In fact, the whole first half wasn’t such a great feeling for the Tigers and their fans. Steilacoom blasted out of the gate and put two touchdowns on the scoreboard in fourth-ranked fashion.

Cole Sager bursted across the goal-line for a Tiger score just before the end of the half, only to be outdone by a last second 29-yard double-pass touchdown by Steilacoom - Herd to Newhouse to Puccino - to put the Sentinels up 21-7 as the teams went to their respective locker rooms for half time.

In the Tigers’ locker room, the seniors stepped up and vocalized the need to go back out for the second half with their A-game. And they did just that. All of them.

Trailing by 14, Burlington-Edison’s defense recovered a pair of fumbles and intercepted a pair of Greg Herd pass attempts - one each by Jacob Bates and Cole Sager. This provided Burlington-Edison’s offense the chance to convert those costly turnovers to points.

31 points to be exact. 31 unanswered points.

Three more Cole Sager touchdowns, one by Stetson Shearer and a 34-yard field goal by Andrew Furney. That’s second half domination. That’s what they talked about at half-time. And that’s just what they did. All of them.

It should be noted to all Tiger fans that Cole Sager has the ability to bash his way to the goal line on his own, but not always. The Tiger offensive line Friday night, which consisted of Beau Bridgman, Conner Nelson, Jacob Schifferl, Hayden Spevacek and Brandon Ellerman blocked the Steilacoom defensive linemen away from Sager and Shearer play after play - especially in the second half. If it wasn’t for these players’ will to do their job, the Tigers’ second half of 31 unanswered points might not have been so dominating. These kids deserve special attention for their work in this game.

Sager does, too.
